How to fit a cumulonimbus into a pillowcase

This weekend, scores of HFC club members descended upon the hanger to work on new front seats for the C172 Skyhawk. The effort began on Friday evening and ended Sunday afternoon. What was left for Sunday was the enigmatic task of forcing a large chuck of foam into a much smaller headrest fabric bag. Kinda like putting cumulonimbus cloud into a pillowcase.

The trick? Put the foam into a trash bag. Wrap the mouth of the bag around a shop vac the turn on the power: the foam shrinks and shrivels enough to be tucked inside the fabric case. Then cut off as much of the bag as you can and seal up with the headrest velcro.

Here you can see the white trash bag holding the headrest foam inside. The black shop vac tube creating the vacuum, and the purple headrest fabric bag it needs to fit in.

The foam is packed into the headrest bag!

And now for the new front seats installed…..

Wow! Great work HFC Team! (no pictures were taken of Friday’s Team)
